Building upon the foundation laid in Islamic History I, this course delves deeper into the complexities and diversities of Islamic civilizations from the medieval period to the modern era. Students will explore the political, social, economic, and intellectual developments that shaped the Islamic world, examining key turning points and their enduring impact.

Course Objectives:

  • Analyze the fragmentation of the Islamic world and the rise of various Islamic states.

  • Examine the interactions between Islamic and non-Islamic civilizations.

  • Explore the intellectual and cultural achievements of Islamic societies during the medieval and early modern periods.

  • Understand the challenges faced by Islamic societies in the modern era.

  • Develop critical thinking and research skills through analysis of primary and secondary sources.

Topics Covered:

  • The Seljuk and Ottoman empires

  • The Mamluk Sultanate and the Islamic world in the eastern Mediterranean

  • The Mughal Empire and Islamic India

  • The Safavid and Persianate world

  • Islamic intellectual and cultural life in the medieval and early modern periods

  • Colonialism and the Islamic world

  • Islamic revivalism and nationalism in the 20th century

Prerequisites: Islamic History I or equivalent.
