Understanding the significance of Hijab in Islam: A Closer Look at Modesty and Faith

Allah Almighty says in surah 24: 31: “وَقُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَى جُيُوبِهِنَّ وَلَا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَائِهِنَّ  as translated: “ Say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof. ” [Quran : 24.31]

1)    This verse clearly states that all beauty and ornaments (zeena in Arabic) are to be covered. The verse generalizing with the word “zeena” which means beauty and ornaments explains that all of it must be covered. In other words makeup, different types of ornaments even if they were part of the dress itself is to be covered.

Styling the head scarf and the rest of the clothing with all the ornaments and all the flashy colors with all that make up is definitely not following the concept of women’s dress in Islam as mentioned in the verse mentioned previously.  In fact in another verse Allah Almighty calls such kind of ornament exposure as the fashion of Jahiliya. (ignorance and deviation before Islam).

Covering all the body is one side of the Islamic dress in Islam, but that is still not the Islamic dress for women if the rest of the conditions are not met; i.e.  The clothes NOT framing or shaping the body or even transparent to show underneath the clothes. The prophet peace be upon him had in fact mentioned this type of fashion as being one of the signs of judgment day where he –peace be upon him said: “During the last days of my ummah there will be women who are clothed but naked, with something on their heads like the humps of camels….”

Another hadeeth adds: “They will not enter Paradise or even smell its fragrance, although its fragrance can be detected from such and such a distance.”

(Narrated by Muslim from the report of Abu Hurayrah).

This hadith is warning us from imitating these women that will not enter paradise, for what reason stay away from following the "trend" and in wearing clothes which they think is covering their bodies, but in reality are not, due to their tightness or their transparency.

Examples of what to avoid: wearing tight pants or jeans or even body shirts even if it were with the head scarf.  Another example: Wearing long dresses that many sisters wear that shape the chest area or waist area even if they the length is long and covering the body. The"shaping" or transparency with the type of material that is used in where it just gives the figure or curves of the body is not Islamic.  This is clearly stated by the prophet peace be upon him in  a hadith narrated by  Usaamah ibn Zayd  who said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) gave me a thick Egyptian garment that was one of the gifts given to him by Duhyat al-Kalbi, and I gave it to my wife to wear. He said, ‘Why do I not see you wearing that Egyptian garment?’ I said, ‘I gave it to my wife to wear.’ He said, ‘Tell her to wear a gown underneath it, for I am afraid that it may describe the size of her bones.’” (Narrated by al-Diyaa’ al-Maqdisi in al-Ahaadeeth al-Mukhtaarah, 1/442, and by Ahmad and al-Bayhaqi, with a hasan isnaad).

2)    Moreover, the fashion that is trending is where sisters may use their puffed hair, or a certain kind of under scarf to lift the back part of their head scarf to make it look like what the prophet peace be upon him called it humps of camels.

3)    Perfumed clothes is now very common amongst Muslim women in our communities, which is something the prophet peace be upon him explained in numerous hadiths had warned Muslim women from using fragrances when men other than her husband or mahram is present.

(2: 9.: “they (think to) deceive Allâh and those who believe, while they Only deceive themselves, and perceive (it) not!”.  Sisters! Life is short, and your body is a trust from Allah…by Allah having people around attracted or thinking that you look fabulous or hot is not worth loosing Allah’s content over you. Winning Allah’s content and mercy and imitating the believing women is more worthy than imitating a celeb that does not deserve to be your celebrity. Sisters take the believing women as your celebrity and win your akhira. And not that any dress in where it follows the fashion of any deviated group Non Muslim, or even deviated Muslims is not considered part of the Islamic dress. The prophet peace be upon him said: “who ever imitates a group, he is one of them”.  Sister! Take a minute and ask yourself who am I imitating? Who am I wanting to be a part of? And know the Islamic dress is not just a dress on the outside of your body, but it also is self discipline…with your Islamic dress you are programming your mind and telling yourself who you want to be a part of, you are also disciplining those that are looking at you, and on top of all you are asking Allah Almighty with each and every single step: “Oh Allah, I’m doing this for your sake, so shed your mercy on me, and make me an example for the believing men and women and make me from the believing women”. Ameen.
